Position Description

 

 
The Family Counselor provides individual, group, and family treatment counseling. The Family Counselor provides therapeutic advice and counsel to other members of the treatment team, coordinates and facilitates treatment interventions and works with therapeutic and other resources in the community on behalf of residents and families.  Participates with other treatment team members in developing, coordinating and facilitating community-based support systems and services for residents and their families.  Provides conflict resolution and crisis intervention assistance to residents and their families as needed. The Family Counselor will also serve as project manager for a small federal grant.
 
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
 
Internal Relationships: Residents, members of the Healing Lodge agency and treatment team.
 
External Relationships: Residents’ families, referents, therapists, counselors, medical personnel, school staff, courts, Elders, cultural community, judicial system, psychiatrists and tribal/government agencies.
 
DUTIES:
 
·        Plans, directs and coordinates family counseling activities within the Healing Lodge;
·        Complete comprehensive assessment of residents and their families;
·        Develop goals and corrective strategies which will prepare residents for effective transition to and functioning in the community or their next placement;
·        Provide on-going consultation, training and education to other treatment team members regarding therapeutic interventions, case management and aftercare;
·        Provide oral and written consultation to personnel of the courts, Mental Health, insurance companies, juvenile departments, community review boards, schools and other youth serving community organizations, regarding therapeutic interventions;
·        Develop necessary social supports for residents and families in their communities, including recommending, coordinating and facilitating treatment interventions and referrals to other treatment resources;
·        Maintain written documentation of resident progress toward achievement of treatment plan goals and objectives;
·        Conduct family and individual therapy;
·        Facilitate specialized treatment groups, including specialized resident and family groups;
·        Perform risk assessments for suicide, self-harm, victimization, substance abuse, etc.;
·        Participate in admissions process to assess resident & family needs;
·        Provides logistical support for families requesting on site family visitation and counseling;
·        Deliver services in a manner convenient to the family and the family’s needs, this includes evening and weekend service provision;
·        Maintains records of all counseling activities and stats on family involvement;
·        Provides family counseling reports to treatment staff pursuant to the requirements of confidentiality restrictions;
·        Participates in weekly staff meetings, clinical staffing meetings, and treatment conferences;
·        Trains and evaluates staff when required by the Treatment Manager;
·        Coordinate all activities required by the grant project including mid and annual performance reports; and

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
  • Masters degree in family counseling, or related field.
  • Education or experience in mental health and chemical dependency.
  • Knowledge of family system dynamics.
  • Excellent communication, documentation, organization and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to present yourself in a positive open manner and serve as a role model to the residents.
  • Ability to handle stress in a positive manner.
  • Ability to work varied shifts and weekends as determined by the needs of the residents.
 
Preferred:
  • Licensed Marriage and Family Counselor preferred.
  • Experience in the use of Dialectical Behavior Therapy for families.
  • Experience working with Native American communities.
